The Vault Explorers:

Dr. Regin Daryl - Human Physician - STATUS: Light Wounds

Erfasin Fastoraanum - Dwarf Alchemist - STATUS: Seriously Injured

Toly Krut - Dwarf Rogue - STATUS: Light Wounds, Fatigued

Cato Greymore - Human Scholar - STATUS: Healthy

Time has passed since the gods ravaged the world above. How much time? Weeks... years... that is not your concern. The survivors from the surface have started to acclimate themselves to the subterranean lifestyle and adventuring explorers have been sent out so scout their surroundings.

One such expedition has come across a terrible place shrouded in shadows. The dark entrance beckoned to them to enter, but the echoing sounds from within repelled them. On their return, they reported that none among their number managed to build the courage necessary to approach the ancient vault.

Shortly after this incident, the rulers of several nations were informed of this place. By this time, the story had grown into something completely different. There was an ancient vault deep in the Hollows and it was filled with unmatched wealth and knowledge. It was not long before a call went out for professionals who were brave enough to plunder the vault and return with its treasures.

Some like to sit around taverns in their off time... others like to get their hands dirty. I will be running this game for as long as I feel it needs to go. I will start with a group of four players and send them into a dungeon of varying difficulty. There will be traps, combat and RP opportunities. I am using a set of rules for a tabletop system but they will be mostly behind the curtain. I will have an offering of classes, races and archetypes for players to choose from. I will make all of the rolls but you get to decide what choices to make.

In this system, you could die horribly very early. That sucks, but deal with it. You could also manage to last until the very end, who knows. If a character dies, I will offer a spot for a new forum member to join in on the... "fun". If no one shows interest, players who have lost their characters can rejoin as a new person.

Here are the details.

Once I have four players, please do not apply unless I ask for more.

Races:

Humans - A common race. Tend to be decently skilled at a lot of things. Humans sometimes have a knack for "winging it". A shorter lived but ambitious race.

Dwarfs - Not as common as humans. This race tends to be tough and strong. Highly skilled but lack the diversity of humans.

Elves - Less common than Dwarfs and Humans. Elves are enigmatic. Their agility is fairly remarkable.

Gnomes - Very uncommon. These creatures are related to Dwarfs but lack their stature. Their small size is a blessing and a curse.

Orc/Half-Orc - A rare exception and often not seen within most societies. You are often shunned and lack many fine skills. An Orc's strength is much like a Dwarf's. An Orc enjoys a greater size than other races but this is not always a plus.

Classes:

A quick note, don't pick something because you think your race would be best for it. I have made all of the races effective at all classes. The abilities of the races can fit all classes extremely well. Also, most skills are open to all races but I list skills that the classes tend to specialize in. NOT ALL SKILLS ARE LISTED.

Also, classes are flexible. Many classes can specialize. Having multiple of one class is not bad at all. Any class make up is workable. Some more than others.

Fighter - This is a common profession and for good reason. There are dark things in this world and fighters are needed to hold them at bay. Fighters focus in combat skills but also receive skills that are needed by a soldier outside of combat. Examples of skills: Fighting, shooting, throwing, knowledge(monsters), intimidation, climbing, basic healing, etc.

Rogue - Common among the populace. These are highly skilled individuals. They lack the professional training in combat the fighters enjoy. They also prefer to wear lighter armor. However, their wit and skill can get them out of many sticky situations. Examples of skills: Shooting, throwing, survival, lockpicking, stealth, notice, tracking, persuasion, etc.

Scholar - Common in cities, not common in dungeons. This class can fight but not well. Not well at all. The scholar has a huge variety of knowledge skills though. Also, a scholar can function as a de-buffer on enemies by pointing out weaknesses or using the environment to their advantage. Scholars can also be useful in dungeoneering. Though not needed for any party, their knowledge can help figure out puzzles or discover new areas that might normally be left behind. Examples of skills: Knowledge(most anything), persuade, notice, taunt.

Physician - Not as common as other classes. A Physician is a knowledgeable adventurer with a fair skill in healing wounds or bringing people back from the brink of death. Physicians have resistances to poison and disease but have lower health. Their combat skills are low but still present. Examples of skills: Fighting, healing, survival, knowledge(plants, healing and anatomy), notice, etc. Also, Physicians can use healing tools and potions more effectively.

Alchemist - Scientists of a dangerous nature. Many more alchemists would be around if they didn't die from experiments gone wrong. Their skills in combat relatively awful but their knowledge of poisons, magic and potions is unbeatable. Their health is fairly pathetic but they have a mild resistance to many magical effects. Example of skills: Throwing, knowledge(magic, potions, poison),etc. Alchemists are given points that can be used to create potions. This replaces the system of magic. This class can be highly effective but know this, if your alchemy fails you, your character might be at a terrible disadvantage for a time.

Archetypes:

Archetypes are basically a short description of what you do and why. In a few words you will list your archetype and I will take it into account when creating your character. If I don't like your archetype, I will have you change it. Don't be stupid. No one here is a super hero, so don't try to create one.

Examples of archetypes are: Servant of the King, Bored Farmer, Rejected Academic, Retired Soldier... that kinda thing. Make up your own or choose one of these.

Applications:

Do it in this format. I will delete any apps that go beyond 4 players. I will also delete apps that are ridiculous.

Race: Dwarf
Class: Scholar
Archetype: Local Conspiracy Theorist

(If you get accepted, I will then ask for more details.)

In addition, there will be a second thread for out of character speech. This way we don't bog down this thread. If a player is not active and others have to wait on him, I'll probably kill him off. If you think you will be gone for a short time, I can probably take over your character for a bit but you have to let me know.

Chapter 1: A Wondrous Adventure

The Vault Initiative was a highly popular topic of conversation in the Hollows. Researchers spoke of lost technology and peasants hoped for fabulous wealth. Many traveled to Salvation Point to enlist.

Salvation Point was a small city with natural and dwarf-made walls tucked deep into the walls of a great cavern. Acting as a barrier to the city was a deep natural lake that provides much of the water needed by the farmers and residents. Over the lake is a thin and long archway that serves a bridge to the city. Aside from the bridge, the only entrance is climbing the sheer cliff wall.

It is rumored that at some point after the cataclysm, a group made up of many nation's survivors settled here. Shortly after this time, a dark force marched from the nearby caverns and laid waste to the farms and settlements in the region. Eventually, the force reached Salvation Point. They say it was an army of the undead. A terrible sight and a dangerous enemy it was. The peoples of the Hollows banded together and defeated their foe with fair success. All that is left of that time are a few skeletons in a museum and some relics held by the undead officers. Since then, peace has reigned.

You have arrived at Salvation Point, taken the test and have shown to be worthy of the task set for you. You have been given instructions to seek out the secrets and treasures within the Vault. If you come across something of great interest or puzzlement, return to the city for aid. Until that time, good luck! Fare well!

You have traveled a fair distance to the location of the vault. The vault entrance is nearly flush with the stone walls of this deep cavern and the flat area it sits in is hugged by a stream of lava. You make camp near the entrance and set up a small fire. You have two large tents and several work areas for your various professions. Each work area has a basic desk and storage chest. You are in possession on trained spiders that act as pack animals. These spiders can carry large burdens but are fairly skittish and flee danger.

The ground beneath your feet is warm and hard packed. So hard that you can roll pebbles over it with your feet and it requires strong pressure to form a depression in the earth with said pebble. There are traces of scrub grass on the floor and the ceiling has several small clusters of glow stone.

Your group has been given some basic tools such as iron picks and shovels among other basic objects needed for research.

The travel was long so you take rest near the great Vault. A feeling of dread is felt by everyone in the party. What lies beyond is impossible to guess. The entrance is constructed of stone brick that has worn over time. Regardless, it is obvious that the structure was masterfully crafted. Dwarfs agree. There are ancient pillars that resemble wood but are petrified and rock-like. Images of scholars and warriors are in relief on the stone in a unique fashion that is not common among any of the races inhabiting the Hollows. There are no doors. The entrance is 20 feet high and is pitch black. There is a slight fog as you approach and the sounds of wind echo through the darkness.

You are awake! The day begins, what do you choose to do?

(Each character can describe what they would like to try. The sky is the limit and I will describe the outcome. Now is the time for the alchemist to tell me which potions he would like to make. Also, always tell me where you want your character to be in regards to other character's. It is important.)

Cato had woken up before the rest of the party in order to get an early look at the gate. Upon seeing the gate Cato walks to the images on the stone and beings to make sketches as he studies them. He also notes the excellent work of the gate, and the style of its design. Once he is satisfied with his studies, he takes some casual glances around the opening first checking for any foot traps, but is careful not to move into the vault ahead of anyone else. When he sees the others of his party he gives them a brief nod.

Humans and dwarves... at least there were no elves. This time.
Toly picks up a pebble and tries it on his tooth.
Typical cave rock. Now I really should put it back down before the humans think I'm odd. Right.
Let's instead see what's down here, then sulk around, eh? Just listen what the talk's about, maybe I can stick a smart word in...

"Eh... Madame you are a wonderful - oh."
Dr. Daryl sits up.
"Oh. Unfortunate."
He stands and begins to brush himself off, stretching and doing some morning exercises in the process.
After he feels fully awake, he looks to Cato.
"The dwarf folk up yet?"

Cato turns from the mouth of the vault to look at the doctor
"Mr. Krut was tasting some of the ground rocks, I'm curious if he is checking how porous it is or actually tasting it, he is walking back over now. I'm not sure if our alchemist is still sleeping or moved to make his potions. I haven't heard any explosions so i'd wager he is still sleeping.
Cato smirks and turns back to the cave mouth

(Man, Emerging, you got some crazy high rolls on your first action.) Cato sketches some of the more obvious reliefs onto some paper. The sketches are of passable quality and nothing of great interest seems to be missing from them. While recording the information, Cato catches a glimpse of ancient runes written on the lining of the door. He quickly jots down what he sees and studies it in an attempt to know more about this place. The language looks familiar and he is positive he would recognize it if he could remember where he had seen it first.

Before returning to camp, Cato briefly checks the area around the door for traps. Seeing nothing obvious, he turns back to the tents and calls out to one of his companions.

"Toly, I didn't notice any traps around the entrance. Can you start scouting the entrance to the vault? I would do it myself but I would like to check over my Tomes, I swear I have seen these runes before or at least something similar. I'll stick by the entrance incase there is a problem"

Cato calls over his pack spider and retrieves his tome. He begins to search though the texts looking for the runes from the wall

"Sure thing, uh. Just be ready to help me in case I need it... right."
Slowly creep down the entrance, basically hugging the wall and feeling it through. Don't want to be surprised by anyone, do I?
