Crazy/Neat Things People Make That You Want to Try in N@W

Postby Koichimaru » Fri Dec 04, 2015 12:33 am

Hey, everyone. So, during the long hibernation, I've been gathering little bits of information that strike me as potentially useful when playing with the N@W crew. Here are a few things that have been helpful and/or have piqued my interest:

Walking Spider: http://www.minecraftforum.net/news/6025 ... able-robot
This made me want to learn redstone mechanics again, so I could make a walking city destroyer. :winky:

Guide to Negative Space: http://imgur.com/a/yqlkc#0
I found that this offered a good starting place for learning how to effectively utilize all space in a given area.

A little thing on Overhangs: http://imgur.com/a/NUnlA
Just a little design choice that I thought was subtle but useful.

Cauldrons as Ceiling Detail: http://minecraftbuildinginc.com/use-cau ... -ceilings/
Minecraft Building inc. has a lot of good stuff in general, but this was an interesting alternative use for cauldrons that I had not considered.

13x13 modern house: http://minecraftbuildinginc.com/13x13-m ... -tutorial/
Though the style doesn't fit N@W lore, this tutorial is all about design with highly limited space.

There are a lot of simple things that I had not considered, like making wood on water look wet (http://minecraftbuildinginc.com/make-wood-look-wet/), and using redstone ore to create the appearance of berries on vines (http://minecraftbuildinginc.com/berry-vine/).

Anyway, what are some things you've found or made in the hibernation that you want to implement during season 3 or on the community server?

I only worked in command blocks... but I really wanna create a perk system using them. It'd actually be really easy. Everything from summoning mobs to shooting ghast fireballs is pretty easy. There are a few things I can't quite do, but I'd love to try and experiment with them... but this is likely impossible.

I thought about the possibility of using command blocks as a potential contest reward (with severe limits), but I don't expect that to happen.

Nice. Always good to share building tricks and techniques. Love tips like the negative space one, those help immensely. Cutting on torch and cobble pollution are my first two rules of thumb.

Yeah, I've been looking for alternatives to torches, and so far the cauldron thing and glowstone/sea lanterns are the only things I can think of. I have a map that I worked on for some time in which I used glowstone as the primary light source for a series of buildings, but I hid the glowstone from view and used colored glass to add visual style to the light sources. Maybe those light-emitting rods in 1.9 will be a good substitute for torches...

And fire + netherrack.

And pistons are similar to cauldrons if I remember correctly, in that they let light pass through. And I think maybe carpet, need to test that though. Not very used to carpet as of yet.

These are some old lantern designs from Water Nation: https://imgur.com/a/3Bn0d
Had people prototype designs so we could line them up along roads and forests and remove random torches. Never got them added though.

Sadly this trick no longer works but maybe someone will get an idea: https://imgur.com/a/DJRtn
Several of the 'planks' you see lining the walls and ceiling in these halls are actually just wooden stairs. Behind and above them (and behind/beneath the obvious wooden stairs) are torches. For whatever reason light bled through them at this time in MC. Was great for cutting down on torch pollution (and for earning more points for city building contest).

I've done quite a few of these tricks. It is a lot of fun using the visual trickery.

I'm with Krazyguy75 in using Command Blocks for mechanics. You can to a lot with them in 1.8 already. But 1.9 will blow that out of the water with conditional commands. Not to mention the ability to have custom models based on data values. I'll definitely have to learn to use JSON better.

AKA Rvan. That's R.van; you pronounce it as "Ar-van", not "R-van".
