Custom Terrain for Gigyas' server

Postby _myst_ » Sat Oct 31, 2015 9:01 pm

Hey guys, so we've been talking about doing a player server for a while, and we finally have one, thanks to Gigyas. I volunteered a few days ago to make us some custom terrain via Worldpainter for us to use. I'm not particularly skilled, but it is something I enjoy doing in my free time. I've posted some pictures of mountains in my custom survival world, tell me what you think! For Gig's server, if you guys want me to follow through and do a custom map, I'd do a 1500-block diameter circular world, with mostly mountainous terrain similar to that pictured below. Thoughts?

P.S.- Brick, I'm sorry I brutally murdered you, I thought you might do the same to me after you claimed that hill we were on. I only took your bread and wheat, and left the rest of the stuff in a chest for you. (Coords for your convinience are (x: -405, z: 132).

Looks good, except there is a lot of dirt and no stone (from what I can see anyway). Leaving aside that there would be points where you could see the rock underneath, high up (where there wouldn't be plants) there would be no dirt.
Besides that, though, fricking amazing job.
AKA Rvan. That's R.van; you pronounce it as "Ar-van", not "R-van".

Thanks Rvan, there actually is stone, WorldPainter adds it in as I raise the elevation of a given area, and it adds snow as well. Unfortunately, because of how Worldpainter edits terrain, I can't get the bedrock showing in cliffsides like you would see in handmade terrain. My question is, would you be interested in playing in a small world with terrain like this?

Well, not with terrain only like that, but I guess it would be interesting...

whats the idea behind the server? messing around? build/survival?
IP?
KB's Idea?: GENERATION 3:
Spoiler:
The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

So how soon are we to expect this to be finished?

Two to four fays left of work, I reckon, at my current pace (roughly 3-4 hours per day). The map's topographical terrain for all biomes and mountain ranges is finished, and I'm currently assigning each biome its custom surface layers. I'll be finished with that tonight, and then tomorrow I'll do the custom caves (stalactities, hollow mountains in some cases, flooding where necessary), then assign biome layers, and finally vegetation, and a quick playtest to make sure the map works roughly as intended. The hard work (raising mountains and forming the topography of each biome) took the longest, but it's all done now. I've been keeping Gigyas posted on my progress, as it's his server we're playing on, and I'll have a trailer for the map ready for the rest of you. Apologies for the wait.

What "wait" are you apologizing for? You did this in less than a month!

Thanks! I'd originally planned to do the map in a manner more similar to the pictures in the OP and finish it faster, but I've learned quite a bit about brushes and terrain generation since I started this one for the community. On the bright side, now you all get custom caves with proper stalactites and mountains that have materials besides dirt in the base layers :D

Will there be any coastal locations/small islands? The pirate in me wants to make a pirate cove of sorts.
